Week 2: Handphone stand

This week we learned about how to make parametric designs using Fusion 360.

Objective: Create a handphone stand

This activity will help us to understand the importance of Parametric Design, at the end of this activity, I should be able to:
1. Create my own handphone stand.
2. Adjust the dimension of the design easily.

Procedures:

1. Sketch a basic shape

It took me a while to think about the shape of the handphone stand, then I have decided to use a hollow shape, so I drew 2 circles sharing the same centre point using the "circle" option. I specified the diameter of the bigger circle as "OD" as 140mm, then I modified the diameter of the smaller circle with "OD/2" function as I did not want the width of the hollow shape to be too thick. (see fig.1). The reason I chose 140mm and OD/2 is because the width of my phone is about 8cm, so the opening will be 8.4cm.

Then I drew 2 straight lines on the edge of the circle, used "trim" to remove the unwanted lines, so I get fig.2.

2. Make improvements to the sketch

After I get the basic design of the handphone stand, I realized that there should be a supporting point to maintain the function of the phone stand. So I drew out the "h" letter using "fit point spline", which then forms the 2 capital letters of my name.

3. Extrusion

I was pretty satisfied with the design, So I "extrude" it with 60mm(the length of the phone stand, so it is not too bulky yet can hold the phone properly) to show the 3D sample.

4. Fillet

In order to make the handphone stand less sharp, I applied "fillet" to all the sharp edges.

5. Adjustment

Then I was worried that the phone will slide down easily, so I considered adding a mini support inside the handphone stand. So I click on "skecth 1" and chose "edit skecth" to draw out the support. Then "extrude" the new shape added.

6. Material

In "modify", use "material" to decide on which material should be used for the handphone stand. So I used Plastic because it is light and Black in color so it looks cool.

Reflection:

I felt that making the design parametric is very useful because I do not need to change the dimension of every line, in fact, I just need to change 1 line which is very helpful and less time-consuming.
